Tugai forests of Karakalpakstan are the integral part of the local people’s life. More than 96 thousand people residing in the communities located nearby the forests store up here the firewood, home construction materials, collect herbs, fruits and use the place for the cattle pasture. Tugai forests on the water reservoirs are the most favorite place for the recreation of the city dwellers during the hottest summer days. Previously tugai forests have been occupying massive territories along the Amudarya River. At present due to a number of anthropogenic reasons their area has been decreased up to 90%. Degradation process still going on. The State Forestry Department conducts tree-planting activities every year. However, these activities are not satisfying anymore.
